چکیده

This study investigates the performance of granular dead anaerobic sludge (GDAS) bio-sorbent as permeable reactive barrier in removing phenol from a simulated contaminated shallow groundwater. Batch tests have been performed to characterize equilibrium sorption properties GDAS and sandy soil phenol-containing aqueous solutions. The results proved that best values operating parameters, which achieve maximum removal efficiency (=85%), at contact time (=3 hr), initial pH solution (=5), concentration (=50 mg/l), dosage (=0.5 g/100 ml), agitation speed (=250 rpm). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis carboxylic acid, aromatic, alkane, alcohol, alkyl halides groups are responsible for bio-sorption onto GDAS.A 2D advection-dispersion, solved numerically by computer solutions (COMSOL) Multiphysics 3.5a software is based on finite element method, has used simulate transport within model taking into account pollutant represented Langmuir equation. Numerical experimental plays potential role restriction contaminant plume migration. Also, starts saturate with function travel time. A good agreement between predicted was recognized root mean squared error not exceeded 0.055.

Removal of copper ions from contaminated groundwater using waste foundry sand as permeable reactive barrier

Computer solutions Multiphysics 3.5a software was used for simulating the two-dimensional copper migration including sorption process through the saturated zone of the soil in the presence of permeable reactive barrier for equilibrium condition. The 1:3 mixture of waste foundry sand and Kerbala’s sand was used as filling material for this barrier. The waste foundry sand was represented the reac...

Removal of steroid estrogens from municipal wastewater in a pilot scale expanded granular sludge blanket reactor and anaerobic membrane bioreactor

Anaerobic treatment of municipal wastewater offers the prospect of a new paradigm by reducing aeration costs and minimizing sludge production. It has been successfully applied in warm climates, but does not always achieve the desired outcomes in temperate climates at the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) values of municipal crude wastewater. Recently the concept of 'fortification' has been propos...

Groundwater Modeling of a Permeable Reactive Barrier to Enhance System Performance

Experience has shown that one of the most common reasons permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) fail to meet performance criteria is inadequate understanding of the groundwater flow system. For example, contaminated water may flow around the ends of the barrier or funnelling slurry walls, under the barrier walls, or through the slurry walls. An analysis of the groundwater flow regime resulting from...

Fungal permeable reactive barrier to remediate groundwater in an artificial aquifer.

Biobarriers, as permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), are a common technology that mainly uses bacteria to remediate groundwater in polluted aquifers. In this study, we propose to use Trametes versicolor, a white-rot fungus, as the reactive element because of its capacity to degrade a wide variety of highly recalcitrant and xenobiotic compounds. A laboratory-scale artificial aquifer was construct...

Removal of Pesticides from Water Using Granular Activated Carbon and Ultrafiltration Membrane—A Pilot Plant Study

The use of powdered activated carbon for fouling control in the membrane processes is limited by some secondary problems associated with its use, like cake formation, long backwash times and blackening of pipes. Granular activated carbon (GAC) was used as an alternative of powdered activated carbon due to its large particle size which was kept from being entering into the membrane system. The s...
